In 1991, The Friends of Reading Tennis started the Reading Tennis Open, now the largest outdoor recreational tennis tournament in the state of Massachusetts, hosting over 250 players competing in two separate singles and doubles weekends. In the 17th year coming this spring, players travel from all over the Greater Boston area to compete in a thriving and competitive recreational tournament, with the proceeds going toward the High School boys and girls tennis teams as well supporting the town’s recreational tennis programming. Despite the unsightly and poor conditions of the current facility, players return year after year to support Reading tennis. With a brand new, state-of-the-Reading tennis facility, the Reading Tennis Open is expected to continue to thrive and expand, offering ongoing support to the Reading tennis community for years to come! With the new facility will come new tennis programming including a wheelchair tennis category where competitive athletes who play wheelchair tennis in the New England area, will be able to participate in the Reading Tennis Open and other clinics on two courts that will be designed with ADA special regulations for handicapped accessibility. In addition, the challenger sports program under Reading recreation will now expand to tennis, offering clinics and programs to children with special challenges. This will also provide valuable opportunities for our youths at the high school level to get involved by providing community service and helping to “buddy” these kids on the tennis courts. |
